Brenden Vetch's unique gift for connecting with the agricultural environment has brought him to the attention of the enigmatic wizard Od. Recruited as a gardener, Brenden suddenly finds himself at the wizard's school in Kelior, where every potential mage is required by law to serve the Kingdom of Numis. But unknown to the rulers of Numis, Brenden is far more than he seems-and his presence just may tip the balance of power back into the hands of the wizard community.

A bit disappointing. All the kingdom’s magicians belong to a school that controls what may be studied. A gardener with strong, unschooled magic joins the maintenance staff and unknowingly sets the school on another path. Many characters, characterization mostly shallow stereotypes: it was hard for me to relax and enjoy the story for what it is, because it takes itself so seriously.

one of my favorites of McKillip's novels. Easy read. Definitely going-away-to-another-world reading.
