4 1/2 - 5 stars. Jo Nesbo's excellent Harry Hole series is getting better with every book. "The Redeemer" is #6. This book starts out with a professional hit on a Salvation Army officer at a concert. Harry starts investigating but as it is obviously a contract killing and the killer is a professional, there are very few clues and no suspects. Harry eventually finds a link with Croatia and goes there to try to find out who ordered the hit. On his return to Oslo, Harry finds that the clues he learned in Croatia might point him to the killer but he still has to find out who ordered the hit and why and looking at the other Salvationists is part of the process. But as he learns more about the people he is dealing with, Harry has to contend with tragedy and learning too much about people he cares about. This was such an interesting and intriguing read. A very enjoyable and fast paced novel.
If you like Mankell or Fossum or Larsson, then you'll probably like Nesbo too. Gritty Norwegian thriller mystery. Very macho, a Scandinavian Jack Reacher sort of vibe.
Many plot lines interweave, and Nesbo confidently plays them out. Add a star if like rough noir. Subtract one if you don't.
For me, 3 1/2 stars rounded down because I don't love the dark stuff in mystery so much. But that's me. May be just the thing for your summer read.
I read this in two days...I am loving the collaboration of Mary Higgins Clark & Alafair Burke in the "Under Suspicion" mysteries! I hope they continue without end!
One of the better Harry Hole police procedurally. If you can handle the Scandinavian angst, I would recommend this book.
Modern and captivating
Another great Harry Hole novel that fills in some of the missing pieces from other books. Looking forward to reading one more in this series.
Not Nesbo's best book. It takes a while to get into the story and a lot of concentration to get through it. Hopefully, the next one is more entertaining.
This book #6 in the Detective Harry Hole series set in Oslo but it is important to read the earlier books in the series (especially The Redbreast, #3 in the series) BEFORE you read this one because of logical linkages among the books; as with the earlier books in the series, I give this book a 9.9 only because nothing is perfect and when the quality’s this high the reader one gets to nit pick; the flaw in this case being that from page 12 until page 30 or so there are frequent changes of place and character that are not too well signalled and therefore are rather difficult to follow; that small criticism aside, the book was well worth the 3 months spent on the library’s wait list to get a copy; there are many facets to the overall story, all handled well, and there are many surprises in store for the reader; very satisfying indeed.
Took a bit to get into but once it got going it was a very good read.
The story slowly unfurls with some great plot twists
I will read more of this author!
