Fun effects and action in a story of feuding Egyptian gods and a very brave mortal.

If this wasn't trying to be a depiction of ancient Egyptian mythology, and was just a fantasy/sci-fi adventure story, I would have liked it better.

I hate it when the so called gods can't cope. The mere humans seem to have better character than the gods. I love Gerard when ever I can see him. Had to watch it a second time because I did not know who Chad Boseman was the first time.

If you are a fan of sci-fi movies, and especially if you are an 80's kid that watched all the old Harryhausen movies on television, you will love this movie. Yes, it is an Anglo movie, meaning the main characters are all portrayed by white actors. (Although they did do a good job of representing as black African deities outside of those we recognize as Egyptian because of the Ptolemaic Greeks- in other words, the dynasty that left us with the final versions of Egyptian mythology. For instance, Thoth, who pre-dated the Gods featured in this film.) And yes, they spent most of the budget on the effects, which was a good decision. This movie is meant to be campy and cheesy. It's meant to riff on B-movies like Clash of the Titans, and the 1958 7th Voyage of Sinbad, etc. This movie was made for fans of Xena and Hercules, the Conan movies, etc.

A lot of comments about the acting. The direction was the problem, actually, but that's only discernible to people that have worked in the film industry, I guess. That's why some of the jokes fell flat, and some scenes weren't cut properly. If you want to make movies like this, watch this one with a critical eye for the direction, not the acting. The whole cast did a great job. And the script is excellent. The script is an "A" for a B movie.

Anyhow, I loved it. Watched it twice! What a fun romp!

Gods of Egypt is a fun, cheesy adventure story about the struggle between the gods Horus and Set, and the mortals that get caught in between. It's not a serious action flick, and it's not meant to be. The script makes that clear. It's silly popcorn fare that I really loved. The cast looks like they're just having fun playing their roles, from Gerard Butler's over-the-top portrayal of Set to Nikolaj Coster-Waldau's brooding Horu, from Elodie Yung's sassy Hathor to Chadwick Boseman's ego-ridden Thoth. The movie is just fun all-around, which is a refreshing change from all the gritty, dark action movies we've been plagued with for the last ten years.

Gods of Egypt is about the battle between two powerful Egyptian Gods, Horus and Set and the mortal who tries to aide Horus to save someone he cares for. After an incident on Horus’s crowning day, Horus is blinded and exiled in a tomb. Eventually he meets up with Bek who offers to make a deal to help Horus defeat Set and claim the throne again in return for bringing someone back to life. The journey that these two embark on to defeat Seth will be a long one filled with action and chances of death at every corner. Gods of Egypt was an amazing movie and I really enjoyed watching it, I thought that the fight scenes were cool and I liked the look of the characters in their god forms. Overall, I would rate Gods of Egypt 4.5/5.

I agree with SaraLovesBooks. 'Gods of Egypt' suffers from contrived and cheesy dialogue, a predictable story, and mediocre acting. Gerard Butler was horribly miscast as an over-the-top and cliché villain. But, maybe I can say that this movie was not really intended to be a record-setting, moneymaking fantasy flick. Maybe it was just intended to be the way it was—mostly entertaining with plenty of hiccups and a lot of CGI. Maybe I only gave this a 2/5 rating (which is generous) because I haven't seen anything like it before.
One day, I hope there will be a remake, where the script isn't trite and the acting isn't either too much or too little. But until then, 'Gods of Egypt' is what it is.

Disappointing, though I knew it was widely panned before watching it. Normally I'm a sucker for fantasy/mythology, but I found the script silly. Visual effects were good at times. Fell asleep repeatedly.

Ra: Egypt has always been a paradise. But now, there is chaos. God of the air, you must protect the mortals.

Horus: I don't know if I'm strong enough.

Ra: Then become stronger.

Few know the whole story. From what I recall, it goes something like this... Before history began, Egypt was the birthplace of all life. A paradise worthy of the gods who created it. So the gods
decided to live there alongside their lesser creation, man. But there was no mistaking the gods
amongst the mortals who worshipped them. The gods were taller with gold running through their veins instead of blood. And they could transform at will into all manner of frightening beasts. Egypt itself was divided between two mighty brothers. Osiris, the God of Life, was the beloved king of all the lands made bountiful by the Nile. His brother, Set, ruled the far barren desert finding both strength and bitterness in his isolation. But then the time came for Osiris to crown a new king. His only son, Horus. It was a decision that would test the brothers' bond and the fate of all Egypt.

Some quotes in IMDb but not these from encounter with Sphinx:
I find your dependence on chance troubling. If you continue to survive, I may need to study you further.
Trespassers in the House of the King, answer my riddle or cease to be: I never was. Am always to be. No one ever saw me, nor ever will. And yet I am the confidence of all who live and breathe.
What am I? (Answer -- You are XXYYZZ.)
Ask whatever you will. Mountains will kneel before you. The winds will do your bidding. Answer quickly, for Apophis still hungers. And night is always coming.
-I want nothing. Except what's impossible for me to give.
