If you work hard enough, if you want it enough, if you're smart and talented and "good enough," you can do anything. Except get pregnant. Her whole life, Lucy Knisley wanted to be a mother. But when it was finally the perfect time, conceiving turned out to be harder than anything she'd ever attempted. Fertility problems were followed by miscarriages, and her eventual successful pregnancy was plagued by health issues, up to a dramatic, near-death experience in labor and delivery. Kid Gloves follows Lucy's personal transition into motherhood, and it also illustrates the history and science of reproductive health from all angles, full of curious facts and inspiring (and notorious) figures in medicine and midwifery.

Lucy Kingsley documents her pregnancy journey in this graphic biography. She includes vignettes about the history of women’s health and pregnancy.

A heart-felt autobiography of the author's difficulty conceiving, multiple miscarriages, and the complications of her eventual pregnancy, which resulted in a near-death experience while giving birth. This graphic novel shares an eye-opening history of obstetrics.

I don't think Lucy has ever written a bad book! This is another heart-felt memoir about her relatively ordinary life. In her last book, Lucy illustrated her romantic wedding to her beloved boyfriend John. Now she's having a baby. Except, there are tragic complications that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

So I can't remember the last time I read a comic/graphic novel - probably when I was a kid! This one caught my eye on the New Items display at our library. After a quick glance I decided that a book about getting pregnant, pregnancy and childbirth in might be a great place to start with my re-introduction to graphic novel/comics as this is something I went through in my recently. OMG - this book made me laugh, cry, cringe and empathise with the author. I loved all of it! I'm looking forward to her new title about Parenthood being released in 2020! Now to find more Graphic Novels for me to read....

Lucy Knisley always provides solid graphic memoirs of her life and this time, it's pregnancy. I was full of anxiety when it was telling the tale of her misdiagnosed pre-eclampsia. That's super dangerous, as told by the memoir. From miscarriages to the ups and down of parenting, she hits all the right notes. It's a very good read.

Lucy Knisley’s latest, "Kid Gloves," is a beautiful graphic memoir about her personal experiences with pregnancy. She recounts several, heartbreaking miscarriages, bringing light to the stigma surrounding such tragedies, and provides historical information about pregnancy and birth-related care. Finally, she surpasses the 12-week mark of pregnancy, after which the risk of miscarriage is lessened, and officially announces her pregnancy to loved ones. Endearingly referring to her growing child as “Pal,” Knisley’s narration of her pregnancy is delicate, nuanced, and often funny. Catering to those across the spectrum of parenthood, "Kid Gloves" is a moving, fearless triumph — I loved every page.

Kid Gloves is Lucy Knisley's strongest graphic novel since Relish, and it's her best work yet. Like Relish, Kid Gloves is both personal and informational. It's a first hand look at pregnancy that pulls no punches. There are pages upon pages devoted to how much barfing is involved in the early stages of pregnancy, as there should be. Though Knisley's pregnancy ended very uncommonly (and Knisley does a brilliant job crafting her OB "Fonzie" as an absolute villain, which he totally is, a pox upon his house), having lived with my wife through two pregnancies I can say this checks out and it's probably a more useful resource than most pregnancy books.

While I enjoyed Relish by the same author, I found it a bit meandering and disorganized. Kid Gloves, though, has a clear narrative through-line tracing Knisley's attempts to have a baby, from miscarriages (way more common than pop culture presents) to harrowing birth and first few rough weeks. Woven around this narrative is an informative history of the (lack of) understanding of female reproductive anatomy. Blends personal and informative really well.

Title bit ironic given what she went through in try try again trip.
What a complex scathing rollercoaster graphic novel. I felt whole range of emotions on the seamy side of male doctors The chapter in b&w felt so bleak.
Biggest takeaway? Keep asking questions on the experts especially on pre-eclampsia.
Nice of her to draw pictures of all the people who helped her in the acknowledgements section.

I love Lucy Knisley comics; I always learn so much, and feel so much, and this is no different... in fact, it's her best work, in my opinion. Knisley covers the agony and heratbreak and love and fear and joy that comes with all things pregnancy, from birth control, miscarriage, pregnancy, and birth. Such a ride. Knisley is a badass, and so are all the moms out there. Phew.
