Howarth does a fantastic job wading through the Norman propaganda to try to get to the real story of 1066. He does a great job - while making clear his own thoughts, and letting the reader know what is fact and what is speculation. You can't help but feel terrible for King Harold, and wish that William had just stayed home. How different England might be today! Whether that is good or bad, we won't ever know. But we do know that the English suffered greatly under William, so it would have made a huge difference to them.
