Alfred Hitchcock directed many movies, among them Rear Window, Rebecca, Notorious, and Shadow of a Doubt, but the Hitchcock film that I watch over and over is To Catch a Thief. Yes, it is corny, and yes, in some places even trite, but the actors, the scenery, and the suspense hold my interest. So what's it about, you ask? The Cat has returned. The Cat was the most famous jewel thief in Europe before WWII. Or possibly someone who can imitate the Cat in every detail. John Robie (formerly known as the Cat) has a choice: catch the imposter or go straight to jail. Who is telling the truth: Robie's former associates, the police, or Robie himself? Based on a crime thriller by David Dodge (his books are being published by Hard Case Crime), this 1955 movie will delight you, entice you to travel to the French Riviera, or make you look considerate in the eyes of your significant other as if you have chosen a movie just for him or her. And as a bonus, consider the eye candy: Cary Grant, Grace Kelley, and Brigitte Auber, such flowers as have not flourished in Hollywood before or since.
