This is a powerful mystery that delivers well portrayed characters, a great plot, wonderful Swedish atmosphere, and just a hint of the supernatural. A young woman is discovered under the ice in a frozen river. The police believe she drowned in a diving accident and her boyfriend's body must also be under the river ice. District prosecutor Rebecka Martinsson has an early morning vision of a young woman sitting on her bed who announces that the river was not where she died. Martinsson must convince the police and the pathologist to dig deeper into the death. Martinsson is an interesting character - a dog lover, a country woman, and a faithful friend. This novel will cause you to see the murderer from a different perspective - all the previous events in his life that make him into the man he has become. I had a difficult time putting this book down. I will definitely put Asa Larsson's earlier novels on my to-read list. The Savage Alter won the Swedish Crime Writer's Association prize for best debut novel and the sequel, The Blood Spilt, won Best Swedish Crime Novel of 2004.
