A humorous crime caper novel, a sequel to *Foul Matter*. It’s not deep, but it’s very clever and fun. I would put this in the category of an Elmore Leonard novel, where the criminals have a greater sense of honor than the attorneys, police, accountants, and businessmen. The criminals are at least honest in knowing and admitting that they are criminals.
The main criminal characters in *The Way of All Fish* are Karl and Candy, professional hitmen with scruples – they won’t kill anyone who doesn’t deserve it. So they do a lot of research on their potential targets and get very upset when their clients get impatient for results. Lots of colorful characters, con games, and plot twists. Grimes has a particular skill of clever description, so you can visualize a setting or a character quickly. Several of the plot twists have to do with clownfish, aquariums, and exotic fish smuggling.
