I'm going to beat a dead horse here and say again that Roth's newer fiction beats this series to bits. If you haven't started this series, save your time and skip directly to Carve the Mark. If, however, you've read the previous two in this trilogy you probably want to finish it and nothing I can say will change your mind. So here's my .02: this series started with a Hunger Games rip-off that Roth did not think through. She tried to fix it up in the next book, and finally here, she's trying to bring it all home and get off that train that never stops. I don't think the character actions always make the most sense, but nothing about the world that Roth set up here was thought through that well to begin with. So go into this book looking for the big ideas. Where does bias come from and how can it be dealt with? Is free will more important than peace? What makes someone human or subhuman? How do you move forward from chaos? Do you choose family or an ideal? Roth's characters all have different answers to these questions and she doesn't give us an easy out. Putting aside the plot holes, Roth does a terrific job of building suspense. Keep the tissue box close at hand.
