Breathless has perfectly captured the essence of the era (1961) including the casual sexism. It deals with subjects usually taboo on television: birth control, abortion, menopause, and the pharmaceutical solutions as a doctor's first choice of treatment. The only comparison to Mad Men is that it is set in the 60's. It's script, themes, and entire focus is nothing at all like the American series satirizing big business. It's jarring to see the extremely limited options and moral choices available then, especially for women. I liked this mini-series and would like to see more, but it's not for everyone. I found it a refreshing change from the period dramas which have flooded Masterpiece Theatre over the years
